2024 seems to be the year of Leopold Strobl. The artist was personally selected by Adriano Pedrosa for the exhibition Foreigners Everywhere at the 60th International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia. At the invitation of Phileas, the curator visited the galerie gugging last year and was enthusiastic about the oeuvre of the Mistelbach-born artist. Pedrosa’s varied selection of works will be shown at the Biennale Arte 2024 in Venice starting in April. As director of the galerie gugging, Nina Katschnig is pleased about the constantly growing interest in Strobl, who also regularly works in the atelier gugging:
“Leopold Strobl has developed his unique, unmistakable style consistently and with passion over the last few decades and I am very pleased that Strobl’s work will now also be honored at this anniversary Biennale Arte 2024 in Venice.”
The galerie gugging presented Leopold Strobl to the public for the first time in 2016 as part of the exhibition “locomotives beneath a green sky”, where a Gugging success story began. Nobody could have guessed back then that within a few years Strobl would not only be purchased by the MoMA in New York for its collection, but will now also be on display at the 60th International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia in the 30th year of galerie gugging’s existence. The Biennale Arte 2024 will take place in Venice from April 20 until November 24, 2024. Leopold Strobl | short biography
Leopold Strobl was born in 1960 in Mistelbach, Austria, and has been a guest at the atelier gugging for over fifteen years. The ideas, templates rather, for his small-format drawings, which look like magnetic portals, come from local, daily, weekly and church magazines. Once he has selected a motif, he first devotes himself to the black areas, then the sky is coloured green and finally the border is emphasized. For his works, he uses coloured pencils in black, light green, three different shades of yellow and rarely the colour red. His works are in the collections of MoMA, USA, the Treger/Saint Silvestre Art Brut Collection, Portugal, the abcd ART BRUT Collection, France, and the State Collections of Lower Austria, Austria. The artist is also represented by our international partner galleries Ricco/Maresca Gallery, USA, and in the Galerie Christian Berst, France. He lives and works in Poysdorf and Kritzendorf.
