“Cavalier novembre” by François Burland is a large, dynamic work executed in graphite and Neocolor on packing paper. Created in 2000, the piece is charged with motion, contrast, and shadow. Across the surface, dark silhouettes of figures and beasts emerge from a dense field of black gestures. Their forms are both visible and obscured, caught between presence and disappearance.

The textured brown paper becomes a stage for this visual tension. White dots and red linear elements cut across the darkness, offering flashes of rhythm and structure. These marks seem to pulse and drift, like trails of light or falling embers. Burland’s technique is immediate and physical, the strokes are energetic and full of instinct.

At the heart of the composition is a procession of shadowy riders and animal shapes. They appear mid-motion, tangled in an abstract landscape where nothing is fixed. The title, “Cavalier novembre”, evokes a sense of seasonal passage or ritual. The figures are not frozen but in transition, moving through a space that feels psychological as much as physical.

This work is a striking example of Burland’s ability to merge figuration with abstraction. It speaks through contrast and gesture, pulling viewers into a world of tension, myth, and raw visual force. A powerful piece that holds its ground with depth and intensity.
