Marko Djurdjevic, On the Path

galerie gugging opens the new year with a solo exhibition by Marko Djurdjevic, following a strong introduction at viennacontemporary last year. His work moves through memory, place, and lived experience, brought together in a deep blue that has defined his painting since 2020.

"On the Path" reads like an open diary. In large-scale oil paintings and wood prints, Djurdjevic explores belonging, loneliness, security, and departure. Animals appear as early emotional bonds, including recurring motifs such as Vincent, the artist’s dog and constant companion.

This collection presents available works by Marko Djurdjevic from the exhibition and related pieces. Browse the works below, and contact us if you would like guidance, additional images, or availability updates.

A blue world, shaped by experience

Djurdjevic condenses memories, experiences, and biographical places into a single, consistent tone. Since 2020, blue has acted as an emotional filter and a space for reflection. The path in these works is not always linear, but it is followed with clarity and determination.

About the artist

Born in Vienna in 2001, Marko Djurdjevic lives and works in Klosterneuburg. He is self-taught in painting and later taught himself the woodcut technique. His years in the Klosterneuburg children’s home, where he lived from early childhood until eighteen, form a central foundation of his strongly autobiographical oeuvre.

Painting outdoors, finishing in the studio

Painting outdoors, finishing in the studio

Djurdjevic often paints in nature, sometimes in the middle of the night. Works begin outdoors in the Danube wetlands, the forests around Maria Gugging, or on Pionier Island, and are completed in his studio in Klosterneuburg. Traces like raindrops, wind, dog hair, and other accidental marks remain part of the final surface, allowing the surroundings to enter the work.

Alongside oil painting, woodcut printing has become central to his practice. Djurdjevic taught himself the technique in the tradition of Werner Berg and acquired his own printing press, extending the same focus and discipline found in his paintings.

A note from Nina Katschnig

“Marko Djurdjevic is an artist with his entire being. The determination with which he follows his path is truly unique. Marko paints every day and even sold his motorcycle in order to finance his catalogue. Whenever something in Marko’s life does not run smoothly, he goes to his studio in Klosterneuburg and processes his emotions in a new oil painting, transforming negative energy into something touching and lasting.”
