“Three figures” by Arnold Schmidt is a vibrant and instinctive work that exemplifies the artist’s raw, rhythmic approach to figuration. In this work, the figures are arranged side by side, each occupying its own space yet visually connected through a shared palette of red, blue, black, and yellow. There are no outlines or facial features. Instead, presence is conveyed through accumulation, loops of color pressed and smeared into dense silhouettes.
What emerges is a sense of rhythm and immediacy. The figures seem to hover between states. Animated yet still. Abstract yet familiar. Schmidt’s technique bypasses realism entirely, relying instead on repetition and motion to evoke a powerful sense of being.
