SCHMIDT - Three figures

Arnold SCHMIDT -- Three figures

“Three figures” by Arnold Schmidt is a vibrant and instinctive work that exemplifies the artist’s raw, rhythmic approach to figuration. Composed of three vertical clusters of overlapping circles, each rendered in layered crayon and acrylic, the piece distils the idea of the human form into pure movement, energy, and colour.

Schmidt is a long-standing member of the Gugging community, known for his expressive mark-making and deeply intuitive process. His figures are never anatomical but rather symbolic, built from repeated elliptical forms that pulse with visual urgency.

In this work, the figures are arranged side by side, each occupying its own space yet visually connected through a shared palette of red, blue, black, and yellow. There are no outlines or facial features. Instead, presence is conveyed through accumulation, loops of color pressed and smeared into dense silhouettes.

What emerges is a sense of rhythm and immediacy. The figures seem to hover between states. Animated yet still. Abstract yet familiar. Schmidt’s technique bypasses realism entirely, relying instead on repetition and motion to evoke a powerful sense of being.

“Three figures” is a bold and unmistakable example of Schmidt’s visual language. Spontaneous, layered, and emotionally direct. It holds a commanding presence and speaks to the core of Art Brut. Creation that is both personal and universal, without pretence or restraint.
